This is outrageous! This dumb girl kills a person because she is too self absorbed to put down her damn phone while she is driving and all she gets is probation??? Why even have a hands free law in California?!? No one pays one bit of attention to it. I see people everyday on the 405 doing 60 MPH and just texting a way like there is no tomorrow. We put people in prison for driving drunk, but when someone kills another person because they were texting while driving it is okay? There should be at least a $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail for anyone caught texting while the car is in motion. If they get caught a second time give them electric chair. I bet some people would think twice.

A Special Place in Hell

Of course everyone knows by now how much I loathe the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and people who text while driving.  Well I now have a new group that I curse.  That's right!  It's people that illegally use the car pool lanes on the freeway.  There is a special place in Hell for those individuals that blatantly fly along in the HOV lane like they don't have a worry in the world.  The other day on the 405 I noticed this woman in a beat up Toyota Corolla slipping into the HOV lane.  At first I thought perhaps she had a baby or possibly a little person in the car with her, but after further scrutiny I determined that all that was in the car was her and a mass of kinky red hair that was in dire need of a hot oil treatment.  So not only was she an illegal car pool user, but a Ginger with bad hair at that.  This of course made me loathe her even more.  I seethed as she zipped along in the HOV lane.  I contemplated shooting out her tires with my x-ray vision or sending a heat seeking missile up her tail pipe.  I searched frantically through my console for an unused voodoo doll, but with no luck.  In the end I simply cursed her and assigned her soul to a special place in Hell along side Paris, Lindsay, the Kardashian whores and Sarah Palin.  Until we meet again...until we meet again!!!

Unless you live in Southern California I'm sure you can't understand what all the fuss is about. So what they are shutting down the freeway for the weekend! Who cares??? Well in a city where distance is measured in time and not miles the closing of a freeway that carries more than 500 thousand vehicles a day is nothing to sneeze at. I plan on staying home this weekend and not getting in or near a car. Let all the other crazy people try to navigate this one.

The Heart of Another

You know I have always believed in honesty.  It has always been my greatest asset and at the same time my greatest liability.  Telling the truth has saved me, but it has gotten me in so much trouble.  It has been said that the unexamined life is not worth living.  Tonight I discovered another secret about a friend.  I always thought I was really good at reading people, but tonight I figured something out.  This person, who I do truly care about, considers me one of his best friends.  I will say this...Most people don't surprise me, but this person shocked the hell out of me.  I tend to think that I am just one person with not much more to offer than what you see, but this person makes me feel like a million bucks.  I don't always claim to understand what goes on in the heart of another man,but having a glimpse into the heart of a friend is more than I could ever ask for.

Freedom: How Much is it Worth?

On this day in 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law.  This legislation ended the use of discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin.  By the middle of the 20th century slavery had been abolished for nearly 100 years, yet African Americans in Southern states still faced disenfranchisement, segregation and threats of violence. Deeply entrenched  “Jim Crow” laws at the local and state levels barred them from classrooms and bathrooms, from theaters and train cars, from juries and legislatures. The brave citizens who boycotted buses, staged sit-ins at lunch counters, organized voter registration drives and the students who faced angry mobs to attend desegregated schools forever changed American society.
Isn't it odd how America is the land of the free, yet we as a country have and continue to discriminate against those that are different?  The fight for equality has never been an easy one.  From the Native American Indians to the African Americans to Women's Rights to Gay Rights, the fight for freedom has always been a long and arduous road.  On this July 4th weekend, let us remember those that have given so much for that fight and hope for a day when ALL Americans are truly free.

What I Learned on Summer Vacation...


It's been 4 months now since I lost my job.  I didn't really like the job, but the money was nice.  In the months since that fateful day I have spent time getting to know myself all over again.  What did I learn?  Well I discovered that I could lose weight simply by getting my butt off of the couch and walking a couple of miles a day rather sitting around and feeling sorry for myself.  I learned that daytime television is mind numbing.  I discovered that our cats spend the day secretly plotting to escape the confines of our apartment and invade the neighbors backyard in hopes of catching the numerous hummingbirds that taunt them day in and day out.  I found out that I really do enjoy sleeping past 9am every morning.  I noticed that the mail does not come at the same time everyday.  I learned that I really enjoy not having to drive everyday.  I came to the conclusion that the merchandise at Crate & Barrel seems to be getting cheaper and I don't mean by price.  I learned that I spend way too much time on Facebook.  I discovered that I can get by without spending so much money every weekend.  I noticed that a lot of other people are out work right now, too.

Bottom line: I discovered that I am more fortunate than most and that I will survive this and I will be better for it in the end.  Most of all I discovered that the people who count the most in my life are still there - standing right beside me.

Oh I see now. This is legal. A 51 year-old man can marry a 16 year-old GIRL and two consenting adults cannot get married because it is "morally wrong"? What is wrong with America?

The Right to Love

The Declaration of Independence says...
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it does not say that only white Americans or heterosexual Americans or even wealthy Americans have these basic rights.  It says that "all men are created equal".  I would love for someone to explain how loving another person enough to want to legally bond their lives together is so wrong.  What gives one person the right to deny another the basic unalienable right of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness?  If people are so worried about the sanctity of marriage then why not outlaw divorce?  I have to wonder if women felt the same way when they were fighting for the right to vote or when a interracial couple was denied a marriage license because "it was wrong to mix the races"?  The last time I checked America was the land of the free and the home of the brave, not the privileged few.


It seems to be that love and freedom are on trial here.  The right to love someone and the freedom to choose to marry the person you love should not be denied by any court, any government or anyone.  Who you love and who you spend your life with is up to you and your special person.  I dare anyone to argue that point.  In the end it is very simple.  Love shall prevail and no one, no one can deny that.

Happy Father's Day

The very first Father's Day was celebrated on July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia.  A bill was introduced in Congress in 1913 to officially recognize the celebration, but defeated on a couple of occasions.  It was not until 1972 that then President Richard Nixon made Father's Day an official holiday.

Doing What’s Right, Even When It Feels Wrong

As young children we are taught at a very early age what is right and what is wrong.  We are constantly reminded of the difference between the two.  At first it is just basic things like waiting your turn in line in the school cafeteria or not stealing another child’s toy at playtime.  We are taught that lying is never a good thing and that no one likes a liar.  Then as we grow older we discover that the lines between what is right and what is wrong are not always so well defined.  I can remember my confusion as a child when I would hear my parents or teachers lie about something.  They would explain it away as a “little white lie” that wouldn’t harm anyone.  According to that rationale a simple lie or misleading statement will have no affect on others because its intent was no harm.  If only it was that simple in the world of business. 
Until the latter part of the 20th century most major businesses operated with little regard to what is right and what is wrong as long as they were bringing in the all mighty dollar.  It seems that for most companies ethics and social responsibility was not something they were too concerned with because they felt that what they were doing wasn’t really having any kind of effect on anyone outside of the walls of their own factories and besides as long as no one else knew then it was alright.  The problem is that the business world does not operate in a vacuum. Everything in the Universe only exists because it is in relationship to everything else.  A business cannot pretend that they operate alone.  There is a constant connection to the actions of one company to others.   The idea that one company can go on operating independently from all the others and not have any kind of impact is far from accurate.  When a bank makes it a practice to make bad loans and is subsequently closed down by the regulators, the effect is far reaching. When a hotel chain takes steps to lower water usage by asking guest to use bath towels more than once, the effect is far reaching.  When a restaurant chain makes a pledge to donate a portion of every dollar to a children’s hospital, the effects is far reaching.  Customers want to do business with companies they can trust; when trust is at the core of a company, it’s easy to recognize.  Many corporations have a gained a bad reputation just by being in business.  It is important to understand that making money is not wrong in itself.  It is the manner in which some businesses conduct themselves that brings up the question of ethical behavior.
In today’s world of instant communication and access to information on pretty much any topic the term private company is almost obsolete.  Transparent seems to be the new label of choice.  When National Rental Car decided to plant trees to offset the massive carbon footprint they are responsible for or when Ben & Jerry’s recognizes that every employee is a major contributor to the company by capping the salary of the top executives that information is visible for almost anyone to see in today’s information age.  No one told National they had to plant those trees. There was not a law put in place that said for every car rented a tree must be planted.  National did it because it was great PR and it was the right thing to do if they wanted to be perceived as a “green” company.  Ben & Jerry didn’t cap C level salaries because of a lawsuit or union pressure.  They did it because they had a mission and they wanted to honor those ideas and standards they had established.  They made a commitment to their employees to do what they considered as the right thing to do.
Today most companies may only do what is right for the fear of lawsuits and bad press, but if the resulting effect is a positive change then there is no harm. Besides it seems to me that the more people do the right thing for the wrong reason the more likely they are to start doing the right thing for the right reasons.   In the 8th grade I was assigned to read ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’. Although at the age of 13 I could not completely grasp the horror of what had happen to the families in the book, I did walk away with something.  Most importantly I remember these words, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world”.

Now that Osama Bin Laden is dead what are we to do?  Well at least we have the war on terror to keep our mind off of the fact the Sarah Palin will be running the republican party into the ground over the next two years. You know, it reminds me of a story of simple girl named Paris.  She is always being harassed by the “Man”.  Poor thing…that wasn’t her purse full of cocaine.  No, it was someone else’s.  Ok, yes, that was her credit cards, money and prescription drugs, but it wasn’t her bag.  




I have come to a conclusion about Hollywood and why everyone there is so crazy. They all have syphilis.  Mel, Lindsay, Paris, Charlie…  They all have syphilis and it has made them crazy.  I think someone needs to do something about it. Perhaps, that would be a good job for Oprah.  She could start a new campaign, Help Hollywood Fight Syphilis.  I mean, her show will be over and what is a self-important, egocentric, attention-whore to do with her time? Personally I am still trying to figure out how to get my own reality show without giving birth to 20 kids or crashing a White House dinner party.  May be someday I will discover the secret of how a no-talent, no-brain, no-class person becomes a millionaire doing nothing but making an ass of themselves.  Until then I will be working for the “Man”, but I will be sure and use my own purse.
